Your Sacred Space

....or altar.  There are always going to be times when it is not appropriate to work or celebrate outside...but it really makes no difference as long as you are comfortable with the place you choose, and won't be disturbed.  Also make sure that your place of choice has enough room for you to work properly after casting your circle.

The sacred circle is usually six to nine feet in diameter, but there can always be room for compromise.  When practical, the altar should sit in the center, facing East...although I do know a few witches that prefer to face their altars North.

During ritual, a candle (or colored representation) should sit in each of the four directions.  Blue is West, yellow for East, red for South, and green for North.  These will protect the sacred circle after you have called in the Spirits of the Quarters.

It is customary to enter the circle from the East and always clean your ritual space by sweeping.  ("sweep out" negative energies)

Your altar can be a permanent fixture or something temporary that you take down easily if needed.  It must be large enough for all the tools needed for working.  Always use an altar cloth, white or black can be used for any spellwork.

Meditation

Meditation cleanses the mind and re-charges the soul.  It is very important for ritual work to remove negative energies from the mundane world.  There are many ways to meditate...you can sit in a comfortable chair, or lie down.  You can listen to nature, or relaxing music or nothing at all.  Find what works for you and use meditation to calm your body often.

Grounding

It is very important to ground your energy after spellwork or ritual.  The energy that you have built up and raised for that certain purpose causes your body to feel almost too euphoric, or powerful.  I have heard of a few people that fell ill for a couple days and had to remain in bed due to building up so much energy and NOT grounding properly afterwards.

There are almost as many ways to ground yourself as there are witches, but to give an example this is how I most often ground after ritual or spellwork:

I squat down close to the ground and place my hands on the soil.  I then let my excess energy drain out from my arms, into my hands, and into Mother Earth.  Sometimes, if my eyes are open, I can actually see it leaving my body with color.  Always make sure to wrap the energy leaving your body with a positive vibe while releasing it into the soil...that way, what you are giving back to Mother Earth is good and harms none.

Dreams

You should learn to pay close attention to your dreams, they could be trying to tell you something important.  With your dreams, you are able to travel anywhere, in any time through the astral.  Your dreams can be precognitive or clairvoyant and trying to shed some light on your future.  Keep a "dream journal" (blank notebook) close to your bed so you can record everything you remember upon waking up.  Tiny details such as the color of clothes a person was wearing or how many animals and what kind were in your dream can play a big part too.

Tips For Spellwork

(in no particular order...just read them all before you start throwing stuff out there!)

1) Before you jump right in head first and decide you need to "do a spell" (like I have heard sooo many times) think first about what you might be able to do to solve the problem(s), if there is one.  If you still can't find a way to fix it on your own in a mundane way, and you think you need metaphysical help....then you still do not have to go right for a spell!  Why not try a form of divination.  (you'll see this again in Tip 4)  If you don't know how to read your own cards or use a pendulum or scry etc, email me at lavens3rdeye@aol.com and I'll help you find what will work best for your situation.  It doesn't have to be very expensive...it could be a few questions for my pendulum, a quick 3 card read from my Witches' Oracle Deck.  Then you have insight on whether or not the spell is even needed!

2) Only cast spells if you know what you are doing!!!  Seriously,---there is a lot more to it than reading words off of some sheet of paper you printed from some website or from some book you bought at a Flea Market!  (hint: why do you think I don't print my spells out here for you?)

3) DO NOT talk about the spell after you have finished your work!  The less people that know about your spell (unless you are in a coven-and all of you did it together) the better it's chances have for success!  Here's one reason why: There are a bunch or people you'll meet (especially when you are new to The Craft, and you are still so enthusiastic about wearing a pentacle/pentagram as big as your head so people know what you believe) that will talk negative about that spell you just did, if you tell them, that is....and they'll say it's just "hocus-pocus" and that "you are a fool for believing in such nonsense"...the more of that negativity going around about a spell you truly believe in, the less it's chances are that it will work!

4) Most witches have some form of divination that they use to help them predict how the spell will turn out.  (you don't have to be psychic for this either)  I have many forms or tools to choose from, but it's good to atleast have one that you are very much "in-tune" with.    If you just heard about Witchcraft yesterday, please stop whatever it is you are about to do NOW before you hurt yourself and others around you, trust me...it's not fun being the one having to try and clean up the "aspiring-witch's"  mistake because she flubbed up and sent something the wrong way...Like to her instead of away from her!!!  (I know that in the beginning, you want to get to the "fun stuff" right away, but wait, read all you can get your hands on, take classes, join groups online, listen to your Elder's stories  and you'll be glad you did later!

5) Think before you speak....Think before you speak....Yes, I meant to type that twice!  Think before you act as well...whether you call yourself Wiccan or not, it's good practice to remember their good rule :
"And Ye Harm None
Do What Ye Will"
